CENTER CITY - May 31, 2013 (WPVI) -- A restaurant company with two major bar-based eateries in town has created a third, not as roomy as the others but just as welcoming.
The owners of Center City's Field House and City Tap House in University City now also own Pennsylvania 6.
The name pays homage to the big band era tune, "Pennsylvania 6-5000". The décor gently reminds you of the 1940's.
There's a well-stocked bar topped by two big-screen TV's. And the menu, while not seeming large, is designed to meet your every mood.
Executive chef Marc Plessis was lured away from the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, where he oversaw the house restaurant XIX {Nineteen}.
His food represents a delicate balance between the restaurant's mission and his French roots.
Some guests will enjoy a selection from the well-stocked raw bar, or maybe a burger or a salad. But those with an adventuresome palate will find Chef Plessis ready to lead them on a European adventure.
On our visit, he prepared sauteed octopus, perhaps more popular in Europe than here. He also crafted a beef bone marrow plate.
This is the sort of food a chef hopes you'll try once. The flavors are such that you're likely to order again.
Restaurant critics would tell you an order like that wins you the kitchen's admiration and that can only be a good thing.
Pennsylvania 6 is at 114 South 12th Street, just below Chestnut, open nightly for dinner at 4:00pm.
Later this year, they hope to offer lunch most days and brunch on Sunday.
For more information or reservations, you may phone them at 267-639-5606 or visit their website, Pennsylvania 6.
