Funeral held for 9-year-old girl killed in Chester house fire

CHESTER, Pa. - August 3, 2013 (WPVI) -- It was a tough morning as family and friends said goodbye to Amajhay Ferguson.

The 9-year-old Chester girl, along with her two young cousins - 4-year-old Moses McKnight and 6-year-old Bella McKnight, perished in a house fire last week.

"Sometimes I'll go to her house to play or we'll dance and make up dances," said Alyse Nichols, cousin.

Nichols says her cousin now has a new role in her life, pictured on her tee shirt, wearing wings and watching from above.

"It means she's my angel and she's right by my side every step of the way and no matter what I know she's there with me," said Nichols.

Officials say the July 24th fire broke out at the Ferguson family's East 15th Street home around 6:30 in the morning.

Relatives say the oldest daughter Tamia woke up and alerted her family - a fast move that they say saved five lives.

People used Saturday's service as a time to celebrate Amajhay's life and it comes one day after she would've celebrated her 10th birthday.

"It was strictly a celebration of life reflecting on the good times and the good things she was about," said Tim Ferguson, father.

Ferguson says the family is thankful for the community's support.

Amajhay's mother, Tyisha was too grief-stricken to speak as her daughter's body was placed inside of a horse drawn hearse.

In addition to losing his daughter, Ferguson says they lost their home and all of their belongings in the fire.

A fund has been set up in Ferguson's name. Donations can be made at any TD Bank location.
