YORK, Pa. (AP) - August 12, 2013 (WPVI) -- A central Pennsylvania police department suspended its search for a missing 7-month-old boy because there is no new information on the baby's location, the chief said Monday.
The search for Hamza Ali began last week after he was allegedly kidnapped by his mother's boyfriend. Officers from several police departments near Columbia have used dogs and boats to try to find the child, who they suspect might be dead.
"There's no plan in the very near future to reinitiate" the search, Columbia Borough Police Chief Jack Brommer told The York Daily Record/Sunday News.
Ummad Rushdi, 30, was charged with kidnapping the infant on Aug. 4 from a home in Upper Darby where the couple had been staying. Police have said Rushdi's brother told them that Rushdi admitted killing the child and burying him in an unnamed location.
Police focused their search near Columbia because Rushdi's vehicle became disabled there as he drove from Upper Darby to the York area. A shovel and car seat were found in the car, authorities said.
Rushdi was arrested Wednesday morning at a house near York and was jailed on $750,000 bail. His lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment on Monday.
