PHILADELPHIA - September 18, 2013 (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia police officer who was shot in the line of duty finally went home on Wednesday after more than a month in the hospital.
Officer Edward Davies was wearing an Eagles t-shirt and gave cameras a wave as he left Temple University Hospital, on his way home to his wife and four children.
He was shot back in August during a struggle with a suspect and was brought to the hospital in critical condition.
Over the next few weeks he underwent multiple surgeries, including one in which the doctors removed a kidney to stop the bleeding.
While Davies fought for his life in the hospital, fellow officers arrested his alleged shooter, Eric Torres, and charged him with attempted murder.
Torres fled after a traffic stop, police say, and then shot Davies in the stomach.
Davies family and brothers and sisters in blue showed unwavering support in the days and weeks that followed, holding blood drives for the officer and healing masses at local churches.
Davies serves the 25th district and he has seven years on the force.
Even though he is headed home, he still has a long recovery ahead.
