2 Philadelphia Police officers injured making arrest

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Officials say two Philadelphia Police officers were injured making an arrest in the city's Kensington section early Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of H and Tioga Streets.

Philadelphia Police say Bensalem Police had been tracking the suspect, 41-year-old Howard Seth Jacobson of Philadelphia, in connection with four burglaries in Bensalem Township.

They got a cellphone ping on his whereabouts overnight and located him in the 800 block of East Tioga Street. They found Jacobson double-parked in a Hyundai SUV.

Bensalem Police notified Philadelphia Police, and two 24th District officers moved in to apprehend the suspect.

The Philadelphia officers were plainclothes officers, but police say they announced themselves. They had lights flashing, police say, and there is no mistake who they were.

When officers approached, police say Jacobson intentionally struck a Philadelphia Police officer with his SUV and crashed into an unmarked police vehicle.

The second Philadelphia police officer reached into the driver's side window of the SUV to try and grab the keys. That's when the officer was dragged at least 800 feet.

The suspect's vehicle also hit several parked cars before it came to a stop. Officers were able to get Jacobson out of the vehicle. He allegedly fought back. Officers used a stun gun to take him into custody.

Both officers suffered minor injuries and were taken to Einstein Hospital in stable condition.

They were released a couple of hours later.

Police say Jacobson was out on parole and has a history of resisting arrest and violence toward officers.

"He is no stranger to police. He is a very violent individual," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "We've had some run-ins in the past with this individual. He wasn't taken into custody easily before, and he wasn't easily taken into custody today. So the police officers are lucky."

In addition to the Bensalem burglaries, police say Jacobson was also wanted in connection with 21 more burglaries in Northeast Philadelphia.

He is hospitalized under police guard at Temple University Hospital with minor injuries.
