Delaware County armed robbery suspect arrested
UPPER DARBY, Pa. - November 6, 2013 (WPVI) -- Police say they have arrested a serial armed robbery suspect, who had become the subject of a massive manhunt in Delaware County.
> 29-year-old Charles Kenney along with his girlfriend, his alleged accomplice, were arrested around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday at a Motel 6 on Route 291 in Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania.
Kenney was wanted in connection with more than a half dozen robberies in Delaware County over the last several weeks.
The most recent happened Tuesday night.
At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said police believe Kenney is a heroin addict who is robbing businesses to support his habit.
About 45 minutes later, after releasing his name and picture, authorities had him in custody.
Haverford Township detectives were on the scene of the two most recent robberies Tuesday night. Police say Kenney targeted the Swiss Farms store on the 1200 block of Township Line Road around 7:00 p.m.
A quick-thinking manager locked the door and the would-be robber fled.
But two hours later, police believe Kenney may have held up another Swiss Farms - the store on West Chester Pike in Broomall, making off with $300.
At a press conference Tuesday morning in Upper Darby authorities outlined a timeline for the robberies.
The first happened on October 19th at the CVS Pharmacy located at 802 North Lansdowne Avenue. The man walked in and demanded prescription drugs. But when the employees refused to cooperate, he fled with nothing.
The next week on October 26th the same man struck again, this time at the Swiss Farms located on the 1800 block of South State Road. Police say he was armed with a knife, and fled the scene after obtaining cash from the business.
On October 28th the Utopia Salon in Haverford was hit. This time, the suspect simulated that he had a weapon, got money, and then fled.
Hollywood Tans at 1000 North Pontiac Road was his next target. He told employees he had a knife, took money and then fled.
In his next three robberies he had a handgun, again hitting the Swiss Farms on South State Farms, and then the Swiss Farms in Springfield, obtaining money from both businesses.
The latest incident happened Tuesday morning at the Subway Restaurant located on the 1100 block of Baltimore Pike in Springfield. Police say the suspect got nothing in the attempted robbery and fled empty handed.
Police think in each case the couple made their getaway in a black Nissan Altima.
An alert Tinicum Township officer spotted the vehicle outside the Motel 6 Wednesay afternoon and the couple was taken into custody. The car was towed to Upper Darby police.
A $2,000 reward was being offered for Kenney's arrest and conviction. So far, no word on if anyone is collecting the reward.
