Police: Capitol Intruder Had Gun

Monday, September 18, 2006

A security officer says a man who briefly forced the U-S Capitol into lockdown this morning was armed with a gun.

The officer says the man who crashed his S-U-V into a barricade outside, was caught after police chased him through the Rotunda at the heart of the Capitol and down some stairs into the basement.

He says the man seemed to be having a seizure and was taken to a hospital.

The Capitol complex was reopened within an hour, but the scare revived memories of a 1998 breach of Capitol security in which two officers were shot and killed.
