Kerik has left jail for the holidays

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - November 10, 2009 -- Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, the one-time candidate for Homeland Security chief who has admitted his guilt to federal crimes, has left jail after a judge said he could be released for the holidays.

Federal Judge Stephen Robinson said Tuesday that Kerik can remain free, pending his sentencing in February.

Kerik left the federal courthouse in White Plains with his lawyers. He made no comment.

The judge imposed some conditions, including home confinement and wearing an electronic monitoring device.

Kerik was hailed as a hero after the Sept. 11 attack. He avoided as many as three federal trials when he admitted Thursday that he lied about his associations while being considered for the top post at Homeland Security.
