Senate looks at ways to help post office

WASHINGTON - May 17, 2011 (WPVI) -- It looks like rescuing the financially struggling Postal Service is going to require thinking outside the mailbox.

For the first three months of the year the post office was more than $2 billion in the red and it's facing an $8 billion loss for the fiscal year.

Sen. Tom Carper said Tuesday he is introducing a bill to restructure the post office's finances and ease some of the restrictions that limit its flexibility.

The Delaware Democrat said the post office should be able to use extra money in its retirement fund to cover future health benefits - taking more than $5 billion off its costs each year.
