Maine case worker blames sitter for baby's death

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - August 31, 2012 (WPVI) -- Maine's child welfare agency is placing blame for a baby's death on the mother of a 10-year-old accused of killing her.

A case worker writes the baby sitter, not her daughter, was responsible for the baby's well-being and the baby died as a result of her "neglect."

The letter was first reported by the Kennebec Journal. It faults the sitter for leaving the "screaming" baby in her 10-year-old daughter's bedroom.

The sitter has the right to appeal the case worker's conclusion. It's unknown if she has done that. She declined an interview request by The Associated Press on Friday.

The 10-year-old girl was charged this week with manslaughter. There are no charges against her mother. A lawyer representing the girl has declined to comment.
