PHILADELPHIA - February 27, 2007 -- Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham endorsed Rep. Bob Brady for mayor Monday, saying the Congressman will bring mature, seasoned leadership to City Hall.
Abraham made her endorsement announcement at Philadelphia City Hall. She said Brady is the best candidate to bring relief to residents of what Abraham called "bloody, bloody Philadelphia."
Abraham said Brady "will combat and control and reduce crime -- no excuses, no pointing fingers, no blaming anybody else."
"I can think of no person," said Abraham, "to lead Philadelphia out of the darkness into the light than Bob Brady."
The District Attorney's relationship with Brady goes back decades, to when Brady was the City Council Sergeant at Arms and Abraham was a fledgling lawyer.
Brady said he was "honored and proud" to receive Abraham's endorsement. Brady, who is also the Democratic City Committee chairman, is one of five major Democratic candidates seeking the party's nomination for mayor in the May 15th primary.
Abraham has been mentioned as a possible mayoral candidate, maybe even as an independent.
But at Monday's announcement she again ruled out a run, on any ticket. "I am not running for mayor," said Abraham.
In another development for the Brady campaign, Governor Ed Rendell's press secretary will take a leave of absence to work on the Congressman's campaign.
Kate Phillips says she will begin working on Brady's campaign this Wednesday, and will return to Harrisburg after the primary.
Phillips says her decision to work for Brady should not be interpreted as an endorsement by the Governor.
Phillips says Rendell does not intend to endorse a candidate in the primary race.
