Eagles Help Out Pop Warner Players

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

New Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb made a huge impression on the kids. He handed out brand new equipment at Smith playground in South Philadlephia.

"To actually meet a professional football player, that was good," said Terrance Jones.

The up-and-coming football players are members of the Pop Warner South Philadelphia Hurricanes.

The Eagles teamed with the non-profit organization Good Sports to donate $10,000 worth of equipment.

"This is kind of cool cause we had to share jerseys some times. We had messed up equipment," said Deshawn Dennis.

Kolb was on a similar youth team in his hometown in Texas.

"All of us struggled to have the right equipment, so if we can provide these guys with a hand, better stuff, it may keep them out of trouble and keep them on the right path," said Kolb.

About 200 children will now be able to suit up and get in the game, but the league provides so much more than just a chance to play football. Parents and coaches say it's a safe haven.

Sharona Terry's five year-old son just started.

"He's really finding out what life is about. He's on the right track or whatever, not experiencing the violence that's going on in the streets, the shooting and the killing all out here in the neighborhood," said Terry.

So now these future players feel safe in their community, and now even safer on the field.
