Source: Pollard with Tide despite legal woes
Former four-star small forward Devonta Pollard, remains with the Alabama Crimson Tide program, according to a source, despite ongoing legal troubles stemming from a kidnapping case in his home state of Mississippi.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Former four-star small forward Devonta Pollard remains with the Alabama Crimson Tide program, according to a source, despite ongoing legal troubles stemming from a kidnapping case in his home state of Mississippi.
The source said nothing has been made official regarding Pollard's status with the program and that the team's top concern is getting Pollard through his recent legal trouble before any decisions are made. Pollard was still listed under the university's student directory as of Wednesday afternoon.
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," the source said.
Both The Associated Press and CBS Sports have reported that Pollard is no longer enrolled at the university. The school has yet to formally address the charges or Pollard's standing with the team.
Pollard was recently charged by the FBI for his alleged participation in a kidnapping plot with his mother.
Prosecutors say his mother, Jessie Mae Brown Pollard, led a scheme to kidnap a 6-year-old girl from an east Mississippi elementary school to pressure the child's mother in a land dispute. Authorities say that at one point kidnappers demanded a $50,000 ransom
The 6-foot-7 rising sophomore averaged 3.9 points in 17.9 minutes per game this past season and was one of four Alabama players to participate in all 36 games. The Crimson Tide finished 23-13 (12-6, SEC).
The loss of Pollard adds to coach Anthony Grant's troubles this offseason, which began with the transfer of the Tide's second-leading scorer, Trevor Lacey, to NC State. Lacey averaged 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game during the 2012-13 season, starting all 36 games.
Alabama added two players in the late signing period in April: former Tulane two-time all-conference guard Ricky Tarrant and junior college guard Algie Key.
