CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs' managerial search made its way to California on Monday where the front office met with San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria. An interview with Tampa Bay Rays coach Dave Martinez is expected later this week.

Renteria, 51, is the third known candidate to interview for the job along with former managers A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta. Renteria has been on the Padres coaching staff since 2008 while managing the Mexican National Team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was an infielder for three teams from 1986-1994.

Martinez, 49, has been the bench coach for the Rays since 2008 after a 15-year career in the major leagues as an outfielder. He was drafted by the Cubs in 1982 and debuted for them in 1986, playing three years before moving on to the Montreal Expos. He returned to the Cubs in 2000 for a brief stint before being traded. He also played for the White Sox from 1995-1997.

It was believed that New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was the Cubs' top choice for their opening but he re-signed with the Yankees last week. The Cubs fired Dale Sveum the day after the season ended and plan on naming a new manager before the GM meetings in mid-November.
