Chip In! Eagles fans react to new Birds coach
PHILADELPHIA - January 16, 2013 (WPVI) -- Fans are excited to hear the Philadelphia Eagles have picked a new head coach.
Now, they want to know more about Chip Kelly and see what he can do for their team.
Kelly might have his work cut out for him when it comes to winning over Philadelphia fans.
First off, many don't know much about him - not even his name.
"I don't know much about him, but congratulations and I hope everything will work out," Rosaline Evans of South Philadelphia said.
Others know all about his success as a college coach.
"Even when you go back to his New Hampshire days, wherever he was at they scored, they got points, and they won," Rich Ciavardone of Bensalem, Pa. said.
"I think it's a great hire. We're lucky to have him. I am very happy. He's young, he's fresh and did well at Oregon," Eagles fan Sean Buggy said.
Some Jersey fans don't seem concerned about a college coach taking over.
"The NFL tends to recycle these old coaches and it doesn't really seem to work. So I think taking a shot at a younger, successful college coach is probably a good move," Nick Tummillo of Robbinsville, N.J. said.
"I think college brings a whole new perspective to it and I think that alone will be a good thing for the Eagles," Joe Harris of Cape May, N.J. said.
Others say they're not so sure Chip Kelly's ready to coach an NFL team.
"I don't know. College coaches, they don't transfer to the pro season. It takes awhile. It's gonna be a system that has to be learned again. He's gonna have to get used to dealing with prima donnas," Joe Abel of South Philadelphia said.
"I think they should have hired someone with experience in the pros. He's a college coach and I am not too happy with it," Rudy Centrone of South Philadelphia said.
Season-ticket holder Gary Weidmann of Trenton, who only bothered to go to two games this past season because he was so fed up with the Eagles, isn't sure Kelly is the right choice, either.
"Chip Kelly is really good, but he really runs a hot offense and the Eagles already have the people in place for that. They need defense," Weidmann said.
However, Joe Rizzari speaks for many fans who are energized by the naming of Chip Kelly as the Eagles head coach.
"Great coach, turned down Buffalo, turned down Cleveland, comes to Philadelphia, much better organization," Joe Rizzari of Martlon, N.J. said.
"If he puts in the right defensive coordinators and offensive coordinators and the right people around him, it'll be successful," Stu Whitman of Hamitlon, N.J. said.
Other fans just say it was time for a change.
"They had to do something because Andy Reid was a terrible decision for the Eagles, he didn't do anything good for them," Tyrone Reeves of Bordentown said.
"At this point I think the Eagles can't do too bad no matter who they take. They have to do something," Mike Reading of Bordentown, N.J. said.
