SAN FRANCISCO -- As the excitement builds for Super Bowl XLVII (47) this year, here in the Bay Area some are already looking ahead to Super Bowl L (50), with hopes it will be played in Santa Clara.
Tuesday night, city leaders met to discuss what it would take to get the Super Bowl in Santa Clara in 2016. The Santa Clara City Council met in a closed door session to discuss the Super Bowl plan. The entire proposal is due in May and in it, Santa Clara has to prove it can handle a massive event like the Super Bowl. Some members of the council wore 49ers jerseys during the council meeting, to support the team in New Orleans. They also want to build excitement for what may be to come.
"We're really excited about it. Of course now all the buzz is around Super Bowl because we have our team in the Super Bowl and so we're looking, even though it's three years out, the excitement continues to build," said Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews.
The San Francisco Bay Area is already on the short list to host the 2016 Super Bowl along with Southern Florida.
The new Santa Clara stadium is slated to open just in time for the 2014 football season.
