Giants' Cruz has concussion, sprained knee
New York wide receiver Victor Cruz is out of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks with a concussion and a sprained knee.
With the Giants trailing 16-0 late in the third quarter, Cruz went up to grab a high pass from quarterback Eli Manning and landed on his head. He did not get up right away and walked gingerly back to the sideline before heading to the locker room for further evaluation.
The pass was originally ruled a 16-yard completion, but Seattle challenged the play and it was overturned. Cruz finished with two catches for 25 yards.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin did not have an update on Cruz after the game. With just two games left in the season and the Giants out of playoff contention, there's a possibility Cruz might have played his final snap of the season. He'll have to go through the concussion protocol.
"I haven't been into the medical room. I haven't looked at that play, but the kid went up and made a heck of an effort and came down on the side of his helmet," Coughlin said. "I know he came down on the side of his head, so we'll see."
In what's been an abysmal season on offense for the Giants, Cruz has been the team's steadiest performer. He has 73 catches for 998 yards and four touchdowns. If Cruz has to miss the last two games, he'd finish 2 yards short of his third straight 1,000-yard season.
Running back Peyton Hillis also suffered a concussion after catching a 14-yard pass early in the fourth quarter with the Giants trailing 23-0. Hillis finished with three rushes for 8 yards, and also caught two passes for 24 yards.
Giants left guard James Brewer suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Brandon Mosley. Brewer doesn't believe his injury will sideline him moving forward, and said he did not go for an X-ray or an MRI during or immediately following the game.
"I don't know. Kind of aggravated it a little bit," Brewer said. "I don't think it's nothing too serious."
