Lawyer: Charges dropped vs. Raiders' McClain

Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain is going to avoid jail time or a lengthy NFL suspension despite being arrested on misdemeanor assault and firearms charges for allegedly holding a gun beside a man's head and firing it into the air one year ago.According to McClain's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, a judge in Alabama dismissed all charges against the former Raiders first-round pick, who is third on the team in tackles. Court documents show that Morgan County Circuit Judge Glenn Thompson dismissed the charges this month after McClain's accuser told prosecutors he no longer wanted to pursue the case. Decatur Municipal Judge Bill Cook convicted McClain in May of third-degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Cook had sentenced McClain to 180 days in jail in May but Steinberg had appealed the verdict and requested a jury trial. The league office was waiting for Alabama's legal system to do its part before it weighed in, but it will not have to now. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
