Source: Cowboys' Scandrick has hand surgery

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick had surgery to repair a broken left hand suffered in the second quarter of the Dallas Cowboys' 38-28 loss to the Washington Redskins on Thursday, a source told ESPN.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Cornerback Orlando Scandrick had surgery Friday to repair a broken left hand suffered in the second quarter of the Dallas Cowboys' 38-28 loss to the Washington Redskins on Thursday, a source told ESPN.

It hasn't been determined if Scandrick will be able to return this season, the source said.

Scandrick said Thursday he also was having discomfort in his wrist, but X-rays showed a fracture in his hand. He suffered the injury when he was hit by a teammate while making a tackle. He immediately ran to the sideline and went to the locker room for X-rays.

"Being optimistic, hopefully I'll be back," said Scandrick, whose hand was wrapped after the game. "If there is any way I can play, I will be back."

If Scandrick cannot return, then he would be the fourth regular on the defense to miss part of the season because of injury, joining safety Barry Church (Achilles), linebacker Sean Lee (toe) and defensive end Kenyon Coleman.

Linebacker Bruce Carter suffered a dislocated left elbow injury in the fourth quarter and was wobbly as he walked off the field. He said after the game he was fine, but he could not bend his elbow. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Friday. The hope is that a brace will allow him to continue to play.

"I just landed awkwardly," Carter said.

Defensive end Jason Hatcher was forced from the game in the second half because of a concussion. With 10 days between games, it is possible he could play Dec. 2 against Philadelphia if he clears the league-mandated protocol for concussions.

Wide receiver Miles Austin suffered a strained hip flexor in the first quarter and was unable to return. He will have an MRI on Friday.

The Cowboys were without nose tackle Jay Ratliff, who was inactive because of a groin injury. Left tackle Tyron Smith was active but did not play because of a high left-ankle sprain. He was replaced by Jermey Parnell.
