Handcuffed suspect steals police cruiser

Monday, March 17, 2008

Camden and Philadelphia police are looking for the handcuffed man who managed to steal a police cruiser this morning.

The man ditched the cruiser at the Centennial Village housing project in Camden.

He had been arrested on the Philadelphia side of the Ben Franklin Bridge after a police chase.

Sources tell Action News that police were originally responding to a call for a man with a gun around 4th Street and Gurney Avenue in Philadelphia's Kensington section around 5:30 a.m. When police arrived they tried to stop a suspicious SUV. The driver sped off and police chased.

The SUV crashed into a pole as it headed toward the Ben Franklin Bridge. Police caught 2 men who were inside the SUV and put them in separate police cruisers.

One of the men managed to get his hands over his head, while cuffed, and jumped into the police cruiser's driver seat.
