May 19, 2013 (WPVI) -- So you've been admiring the outdoor glass lanterns on stakes for quite a while &but you need several of them and the cost has been stopping you from buying them. Well, guess what? You can make your own for a fraction of the cost&I'll show you!
To start, all you need is a tuna can, a screw, a wooden dowel, broomstick or spindle, a plastic bottle cap that fits over the end of the wooden dowel and a few small jar lids that will create a tiered look.
Drill the pilot hole in the top of the wooden dowel or spindle& Use a hammer and awl to make a hole in the center of the tuna can. Now put the bottle cap and a few tiered lids between the can and the stick, this will act as a nice transition between the 2 pieces and will give some added support. I glued the 3 pieces together first to make it easier to drill the pilot hole.
Screw down thru the can into the dowel to secure the pieces together.
This is the base for your garden lantern, now...just spray paint to match your décor!
Once the paint is dry&add a glass hurricane and candle! Can't find a glass hurricane&try a small vase&or even a drinking glass.
That's all there is to it! An easy and inexpensive way to add ambiance to your outdoor living! I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
