NEWARK, DELAWARE - AUGUST 16, 2007 -- Four vehicles collided on Interstate-95 Thursday night, forcing the closure of the northbound lanes.
The crash happened about 9:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95, near Exit 1, just south of the toll plaza.
Four vehicles collided, including several sedans and a full-size van. At least one of the vehicles rear-ended another.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. 18 others were taken to hospitals.
Police say the three vehicles were stopped in heavy traffic in the northbound lanes, just north of the Maryland-Delaware state line. According to police, the van driven by 27-year-old Hai Lin of Kimball, Tennessee crashed into a car, which was then driven forward in a chain reaction crash.
A passenger in the car, 23-year-old Meghan Kieffer of Arlington, Virginia died at the scene.
Nine passengers in the van and two people in the car were taken to area hospitals with mostly minor injuries. Lin was charged with Operating a Vehicle Causing Death.
Delaware State Troopers closed that stretch of I-95 northbound, while Accident Reconstruction Specialists investigated.
