PHILADELPHIA - November 30, 2010 (WPVI) -- Eating fresh and local has grown into a major movement in Philadelphia. Adam Joseph has an FYI for you on a new 2-hour walking food tour being offered this month only that celebrates some of the city's best homegrown eats.
The first stop: Reading Terminal Market, to hit the Fairfoods Stand where Jonamac apples are dipped in honey and served with cranberry granola and yogurt.
Ann Karlen says that Fair Food Farmstand, "Our farmstand brings food from 90 family farmers and producers all located within about a 150 mile radius of Philadelphia. "
Next, City Food Tour Guide Eric Matzke takes us to Salumeria, where there's a menu board full of locally made cheeses like Misty Lovely - a goat cheese.
At Tweed Restaurant, Chef David Cunningham has built his menu from locally sourced and sustainably produced ingredients. There's rainbow trout that comes from the Poconos and beet and goat cheese salad with pork tenderloin topped with apples.
Hosted by City Food Tours, the tour is a partnership with GPTMC, which launched its Philly Homegrown campaign in June.
The final step on the tour: Dessert time. For that, we hit Capogiro where the gelato is made with Lancaster County milk and lots of locally grown produce. Dessert is a delicious game of guessing the local flavors.
The Philly Homegrown Tour will be offered on Saturdays, December 11th and December 18th from 3-5pm. You can go to cityfoodtours.com to reserve a spot. You can also check out food.visitphilly.com for lots of info on eating local, including recipes for what's in season.
