Mild, but Breezy Saturday
November 20, 2010 (WPVI) -- Temperatures are expected to rebound this afternoon thanks to a southwest wind. It will be mild and breezy with a high of 57 in Philadelphia.RELATED: Stormtracker 6, extended forecast and more on the 6abc.com Weather Channel
SATURDAY: There is a weak front that moves through tomorrow afternoon and the wind will kick up ahead of the front. The winds could gusts anywhere from 25 to 30 miles per hour. The high will be around 57 degrees. Once the front clears the area and moves offshore, the winds will turn northeasterly and usher in cooler air Saturday night and into Sunday.
SUNDAY: A few more clouds are possible, but it still looks like a nice-looking day with partly to mostly sunny skies. Cooler air will filter in again, though, as the winds turn from north behind a weak, passing front. Our high may only reach to upper 40s! Good luck to all the runners of the Philadelphia Marathon and Half-Marathon. The weather looks chilly but not all that breezy for the race! It will be dry but very chilly for that big night time Eagles showdown against the Giants. The game time temperature will be in the mid 40s.
MONDAY: The next storm system is delayed and it looks like we squeeze out a partly sunny day and it will be mild, but there will be a lot of low level moisture around, so temperatures will stay in the mid- 50s. It may be cooler depending on how much clouds are around or it could be warmer depending on how much sunshine. The high: 58.
TUESDAY: There will be intervals of clouds and sunshine and still mild. The high in Philadelphia: 63. There could be a spotty shower late in the day.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy and cooler weather is expected with a high of only 55. For those of you traveling the day before Thanksgiving, we are watching a system that is moving through, but right now it's too soon to tell when the rain will arrive. Right now, rain is likely and mainly late in the day.
THURSDAY (THANKSGIVING): The early look suggests a cloudy and cool day with a high of only around 53. It looks like rain will be around for the first half of the day, although we're still trying to pin down how much. It may only be showers, but some models are suggesting a steadier rain. As usual, there's a lot of disagreement this far out. The temperature for the start of the 6abc/IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade are expected to be around 43.
FRIDAY: Chillier air begins to move in with clouds and sun, a couple of possible showers, and a high of only 46.
LOOKING BEYOND THANKSGIVING: While model solutions are highly variable this far out into the future there are signs that a big shot of arctic air is on its way to the U.S. At least one of the main U.S. models (GFS) has been hinting at a deep trough across the eastern half of the country with well below normal temperatures starting the weekend after Thanksgiving. Looking at some other long range variables like the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) we see both turning strongly negative to end November and begin December. These negative phases usually correlate to Arctic air sliding down from the north as pressures differences between the arctic and mid-latitudes lessen allowing the cold dense air that was previously bottled up to slide south. The negative phase of the NAO also correlates to a blocking pattern across Greenland and allows a trough to develop across the eastern U.S. If this were to be the case then the situation would be ripe for some early winter weather chances. This, by the way, would also marry well with our AccuWeather Winter Forecast which called for a colder than average December. Stay tuned!
