In January 1996, Gilbert Baez joined ABC 11 Eyewitness News as a reporter in Fayetteville. Baez also served as a Weather Anchor for three years, co-hosting Eyewitness News Sunday Morning.
He recently retired as a radio newscaster after 30-years of broadcasting on several local radio stations. His Television career began in 1986 as a Weathercaster and Reporter for WKFT-TV 40 in Fayetteville. Gilbert also worked as a Weathercaster and Reporter for WRAL-TV, where he served as Fayetteville Bureau Chief. In his earlier years, Baez gained insight into the military as an Army veteran and graduate of the esteemed U.S. Army Ranger School. Because of this experience, he brings a tremendous understanding of the military -- in particular Ft. Bragg, where he was stationed as a Combat Communications Officer. Gilbert has reported from a number of military hot-spots around the world including Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Albania, Somalia, Egypt, Jordan and El Salvador.
Gilbert also worked as a Community Relations Specialists with the Cumberland County Schools. There he developed and produced an educational television show called "Great Expectations," which highlighted the wonderful achievements of students and teachers in the county, and won national acclaim in its first year on the air.
In addition to his duties as a reporter for ABC 11 Eyewitness News, Gilbert is also an Adjunct Professor at Campbell University since 1990. Over the years he's taught several courses, including Television Reporting, Radio Production, ENG Photography and Speaking for Radio and Television.
Gilbert is a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He has a BA in English with special emphasis in Radio and Television Broadcasting. He has won numerous Journalism awards, including a prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award for a story he wrote and produced about a deadly fighter jet crash at Pope Air Force Base.
Gilbert and his family reside in Fayetteville.
