Barbara Gibbs

Barbara Gibbs

Barbara Gibbs joined ABC 11 Eyewitness News in 2001. She co-anchors the morning and noon newscasts with Eyewitness News Anchor John Clark, Amber Rupinta and ABC-11 AccuWeather Meteorologist Don Schwenneker.

Having covered all kinds of news, Barbara's passion is telling stories about the positive power of the human spirit. In 2008, the Nashville Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Barbara with an Emmy for best feature story for "Homeless Singers;" a piece about three homeless men in Raleigh with a desire to be gospel singers. Barbara also received an Emmy nomination for a second feature "Barbara Gibbs' Little Valentine," a story about a young boy in Spring Lake, NC, who touched her heart on Valentine's Day.

Some of Barbara's most moving experiences this year: traveling to New York City with a Durham breast cancer survivor to meet "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts. She also met a miracle family; a young mother with cystic fibrosis who survived giving birth and a double-lung transplant. She also had the honor of telling a soldier's story; local veterans in the homebuilding industry built a house for free for a triple amputee Iraq war soldier and his wife.

Barbara enjoys being active in the community, participating every year with talented young, local golfers in the "Jimmy V Jr Celebrity Golf Classic," raising money for pediatric cancer research. This year, Barbara participated in various fundraising events benefiting groups ranging from the MDA, American Cancer Society, and Building Together Ministries.

Barbara was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, then the family made two other moves (Texas and New Jersey) before settling in the place she considers home -- Mobile, Alabama.

Like every member of her family, Barbara attended Auburn University. She graduated with a BA degree in journalism (PR) and a minor in sociology.

Before coming to Raleigh, Barbara was the morning anchor/reporter at WTVQ (Lexington, KY) and then co-anchored the 6/11pm shows at WSLS-TV (Roanoke, Virginia).

Barbara enjoys college football (WAR EAGLE), traveling, and going home to be with family and friends. She lives in Raleigh with her Maltese, Sophie.
