Tim Nelson joined the ABC 11 Eyewitness News team as a general assignment reporter in August 2003.
The UNC-Chapel Hill graduate is thrilled to be living and working in the Triangle. Before coming back to the Tar Heel state, Tim reported for KOAA, the NBC affiliate, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. There, he covered everything from the U.S. Air Force Academy sexual assault scandal to the worst wildfire season in the state's history; he even got to fly in an F-16 with the Air Force's "Thunderbirds".
At ABC 11, Tim spends most of his time covering the Heart of Carolina, but stories have often taken him far from the viewing area. In September of 2005, Tim traveled to New Orleans and reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In the fall of 2003, he spent six weeks embedded with the 82nd Airborne Division, traveling with a helicopter unit to both Kuwait and Iraq.
Tim's reporting has earned him awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Broadcast Educator's Association and the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, among other broadcast news organizations. He attended UNC on the prestigious Morehead Scholarship.
Tim also handles the duties of Traffic Reporter during ABC 11 Eyewitness News in the morning hours as well.
Away from work, the Chicago-area native enjoys working out, reading and following his beloved Tar Heels and Chicago Cubs.
Tim and his wife, Erica, live in Raleigh with their rat terrier Bluebelle.
