Mat Mendez joined the ABC 11 Eyewitness News team in September 2009 as a digital journalist. He came to the triangle from Los Angeles, where he was a freelance field producer for ABC News' "Good Morning America," and an anchor and reporter for Annenberg TV News, the newscast at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Journalism.

While in Los Angeles, Mat covered a number of breaking news events, including multiple wildfires, severe weather, and one of the nation's deadliest rail accidents. In addition, he reported on crime in some of the most dangerous sections of L.A.

He also worked for GMA at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, helping with four days of nearly non-stop political coverage.

Mat has won a number of awards for his work, including the 2009 William Randolph Hearst Foundation award for "Best Use of Television in News Coverage," and a second-place award in the foundation's national championship competition. He has also been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists as a national finalist and regional winner in the category of news photography. Scripps Howard called him one of the nation's "Top Ten" college journalists while he was in school.

Mat now lives in South Durham, and is excited to experience all that the triangle has to offer. He's also looking forward to getting out to a few NASCAR races in this part of the country.
