News Happens

Bill Ritters daily take on the news.

Bill Ritter's daily take on the news.

Here's a little secret about our 11 o'clock newscast and this daily blog. I'm writing this at 4 p.m., and so we have a solid 7 hours before the newscast. Lots can, and does, happen in between. It's why they call it news.

Who knew as I wrote this column yesterday that some troubled person would put a backpack at the finish line of the Boston Marathon just to see how cops would react? Or that a ferry carrying nearly 500 people in South Korea, most of the passengers being high school students, would sink? Or that the NYPD would decide to disband its controversial clandestine effort to spy on Muslim groups? Or that Mayor Bloomberg would chip in $50 million of his own money to start an anti-gun group that targets women, modeled after "Mothers Against Drunk Driving?"

News happens.

And I often think as I write these daily entries, what in the world will happen between now and the time of our 11 p.m. newscast? The answer is always something, and sometimes it's big.

So with that in mind, we're sending our reporters out and about to check out stories. And we're asking Meteorologist Lee Goldberg how the weather can so quickly go from warm spring back to cold winter.

He'll have the answer in his AccuWeather forecast.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
