WILMINGTON -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it will not replace a sign that has been stolen five times.
The sign reads "Barstow, Calif. 2,554."
The DOT says the sign keeps getting stolen. The sign's four predecessors had been replaced, but this time the DOT says enough is enough.
For years, motorists could see the sign when heading west out of Wilmington. A similar sign is on I-40 East in California. It reads, "Wilmington, NC 2,554 mi."
Apparently, California also has dealt with thefts of its sign.
