G105's Bob and the Showgram gets serious for kids with cancer

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

If you listen to Bob and the Showgram on radio station G105, you know they're funny - sometimes controversial - and Bob is known to get into some trouble from time to time. But one day a year, they stop joking around and get serious.

The station dedicates almost the entire day to Bob's Buddies - children who are battling cancer.

Host Bob Dumas knows what it's like. Diagnosed himself in 2007 with a brain tumor, and now fully recovered, he says he's honored to give back.

"Lu and I went to Duke and whenever we'd walk into the big boy hospital, we'd look at the kids hospital and say 'Thank God we are going into this one and not there,'" Dumas recalled.

One of Bob's Buddies is 5-year-old Ella Cate. Diagnosed at age 2 and a half, she doesn't remember a time when she didn't have cancer. Her tumor was caused by a rare genetic disorder and, because of that, traditional treatment would destroy her quality of life.

"You get to hear stories like Ella Cate's. It's the right thing to do.  You're thankful and you know you've done the right thing for other families," said Dumas.

The money raised for Bob's Buddies - now in its 6th year - benefits the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. Without those critical dollars, Ella Cate would not get investigational treatment and her doctors would not be cautiously optimistic about her future.

Her mom says she would not be thriving without the help she's getting.

"She's in kindergarten, running around, no problems. Her quality of life has been really good. We are very thankful for that," said her mom.

The 6th annual Bob's Buddies is Wednesday, November 27.  For all the details on how to give, go to http://www.g105.com/pages/bobandtheshowgram.html.
