Grab a Stroller... Go Power Strolling

Thursday, June 14, 2007

Getting in shape after having a baby can be quite a challenge for new mothers. But there's a group in the Triangle making working out very easy for moms and their babies.

Healthy Moms, a company dedicated to promoting successful health and wellness programs to new expectant moms, has classes for women before, during and after pregnancy. Many workouts address the challenges new mothers face from problem areas to childcare. Some workouts even involve the babies and are designed to whip mothers back into shape.

Armed with strollers and a fitness instructor, several Wake County mothers hit a power stroll. Kate Lempka has a five month old son and continues taking a power strolls. "Its a good workout," she said, "It takes a lot of energy and determination to get out here when most of us aren't sleeping yet."

Sleep deprivation isn't stopping the mothers from going through a rigorous workout in the park. Stroller by stroller they're rolling with baby and working up a sweat in one of several classes given by Healthy Moms Fitness.

Julie Schmid is a peri-natel instructor. "Basically what we're doing is a cardio workout. We also mix in resistance work."

Generally women want to address their trouble spots, their legs or their abdominals and lose their baby bellies. Julie says the best way to do that is through interval training. "Intervals is the best way to burn fat."

While the jumping jacks, tricep dips and resistance bands helps with the fat burning, these mothers also say they love the connection. "Its great having that support instead of just being at home just with the baby you get to get out and get some fresh air and meet some other new moms who are going through the same thing you are," Kathy said.

Vivian Mast is the mother of a 12-week-old girl. She says she loves the convenience. "The good thing about this class is you can take the baby with you. You don't have to find a sitter and everybody is a mom."

Power strolling is just one of several classes offered by Healthy Moms. You can sample a class for free. Click here for more information.
