Dozens of people attended a public meeting in Chapel Hill Wednesday to discuss a chemical waste disposal site.

The dump site is on the UNC property near the Horace Williams Airport.

The university used the area more than 30 years ago, to bury laboratory chemical waste generated by the campus and what was then NC Memorial Hospital.

Now they want to safely remove the chemicals. Officials say the public should not be alarmed.

"I think the public can feel very confident that the project will go forth in a safe manner with little risk to the public and to workers and we'll do it in a safe manner," Environment Health and Safety Spokesperson, Ray Hackney said.

Officials expect the dump site to be cleaned up by August.
