Driver's license issuance changes start Tuesday

  

RALEIGH, NC -- The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has a new method to issue driver's licenses as a way to stop fraud and identity theft.

Motorists will continue to visit a local DMV office, take tests and get a photo. But drivers will only receive a temporary paper license valid for 20 days.

The DMV office in Lillington will be first in the state to use the process Tuesday. It will expand to offices statewide by the end of the year.

With the new process, licenses will be created at a central location, where employees will scrutinize identification data before licenses are mailed to the recipient. Most customers should receive a license in about a week.

The General Assembly approved the central-issuing system in 2006.
