Yow hospitalized

Wednesday, January 21, 2009

N.C. State says head women's basketball coach Kay Yow is in the hospital.

Yow, who's fighting stage four breast cancer, took a leave of absence on January 6 because of health problems. A school spokesman says she went to the hospital last week on the advice of her oncologist and remains there.

The name of the hospital was not released.

Yow has coached the Wolfpack for 34 seasons, and her courage and determination in her fight against the disease has been an inspiration to her players and many fans. She was first diagnosed in 1987 and experienced a reoccurrence in 2004 that took her out of coaching temporarily.

She missed her first game this season on December 22, saying she was too fatigued to walk the sideline. She later stepped down for the year.

"Stepping away from coaching is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make, but I have great confidence in the experienced staff I have been working with for such a long time and the character of everyone involved in the program to respond positively to my decision," Yow said at the time.

Associate head coach Stephanie Glance is serving as interim head coach.
