Running for doughnuts

Saturday, February 07, 2009

Participants in a charity race had to eat-and-run Saturday.

Thousands turned out for the charity race at North Carolina State University Saturday morning. The event kicked off around 9:30 a.m. in downtown Raleigh.

According to the Krispy Kreme Challenge's Web site over 5,000 racers registered to partake in the fun, breaking the challenge record.

The fifth annual Krispy Kreme Challenge challenged racers to run the four mile race without losing their sweet doughie breakfast.

Participants had to run two miles from the N.C. State bell tower down Peace Street to the Krispy Kreme store at the intersection of Peace Street and Person Street, down a dozen glazed doughnuts, then run back to the bell tower --in less than 60 minutes.

The race is held to raise money for the North Carolina Children's Hospital. The event originates from a dare among 10 college friends in 2004.

The event went through 48,000 doughnuts and raised $35,000.

This year's winner, Cameron Dorn, received a golden doughnut medal and five dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts to take home.

"It's awesome --gross-- little bit gross, but awesome," Dorn said.
