ABC11 completes switch to DTV

Pass this along to anyone having trouble with the DTV switch.

Some Eyewitness News viewers tell us they cannot see our off-air signal.

The FCC said Wednesday, June 17 that it is confident the problems can be solved. Click here to read "FCC Spokesman: VHF Issues Solvable".

Here is what you need to know:

• ABC11 is now broadcasting on VHF channel 11.


• You need a VHF/UHF antenna to receive ABC11 and all other digital programming.

Possible DTV fix from the FCC:
"Double Re-Scan" your box following the instructions below.

Many consumers already know about the need to run the "scan" function on their digital converter boxes or digital TV sets periodically following the June 12 digital TV transition. Scanning searches for and "remembers" the available digital broadcast channels.

But in some cases where stations moved their digital frequencies on June 12, simple scanning may not be enough. There is a procedure - sometimes called "double rescanning" - that can clear your box's memory of saved channels. These earlier scans may have saved channel information that is now incorrect.

There are five simple steps to a double rescan for a converter box or digital TV, which are as follows:

1. Disconnect the antenna from the box or digital TV.
2. Rescan the box or digital TV without the antenna connected. As with any scan follow the on-screen instructions or owner's manual for your device.
3. Unplug the box or digital TV from the electrical outlet for at least one minute.
4. Reconnect the antenna to the box or digital TV and plug the unit into the electrical outlet.
5. Rescan the box or digital TV one more time.

Message from ABC11 Chief Engineer Curtis Meredith:

On Friday, June 12th at 12:30 p.m., ABC11-WTVD switched from channel 52 (UHF) to channel 11 (VHF) as assigned by the FCC.

This change also required us to substantially reduce our power level. Both of these factors have made it difficult for many viewers to receive a viewable signal.

This is especially a problem with indoor antennas. A UHF-only antenna probably won't work for channel 11 anymore.

Since WTVD is the only station in this area assigned to a VHF channel, you may be able to receive all local stations but us.

I assume that you have already rescanned your TV or converter box.

If you have an all-channel indoor antenna, try to re-orient it or raise it to a higher level. If this doesn't work then you'll probably need an attic or outdoor antenna. The most important factor is that the antenna be designed for VHF channels as well as UHF channels.

All of us at ABC11 are very concerned about this loss of coverage and we are working to find a solution. At this time we're not sure what that solution will be or when it will happen but we are meeting with federal officials to work out an acceptable plan.
