Man accused of threatening governor

Thursday, June 25, 2009

A Raleigh man is accused of threatening North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue.

Investigators said 46-year-old Angelos Vangelos threatened Perdue and several other top state leaders.

Arrest warrants said Vangelos allegedly wrote the governor a letter that stated he would kill her and blow up her home.

Press Secretary Chrissy Pearson released a statement Wednesday on behalf of Gov. Perdue following Vangelos' arrest.

"Governor Perdue thanks the dedicated law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to keep those of us who serve the state -and all North Carolinians- safe from harm.

Search warrants showed, on Monday a Raleigh Police Threat Assessment Unit member watched Vangelos mail another letter to North Carolina Senator Josh Stein.

When officers recovered the letter they discovered it was similar in tone to a threatening letter mailed to Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and Governor Perdue.

In addition to threats against Perdue, Meeker and Stein; arrest warrants stated Vangelos mailed threats to former Governor Mike Easley, his wife Mary, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and President Barack Obama -among other local city and county officials. Vangelos also allegedly left threatening voice mails to Susan Banks, Paul Coble and Toney Gurley

Police searched Vangelos' vehicle and his Raleigh apartment and seized numerous newspapers, notepads, envelopes and a telephone.

He has been charged with at least 29 counts of making threats against an executive officer in all cases and two counts of making a bomb threat. All of the charges are felonies.

Vangelos also has a history of communicating threats. He was charged back in 1989 for using profane language to communicate threats.

Vangelos is in the Wake County jail under a $1 million bond.
