Officer allegedly assaulted by trooper

  

EDGECOMBE COUNTY (WTVD) -- Rocky Mount police are asking the SBI for help with an assault case.

It claims an on-duty officer was assaulted Tuesday night by an on-duty state trooper.

The trooper, Byron Varnell, was placed on administrative duty Wednesday morning.

Officials said 34-year-old Varnell joined the patrol in 2001 and is assigned to Edgecombe County.

The Highway Patrol said it is investigating the alleged incident, but authorities are not releasing any other specifics.
