Police forcefully enter grandmother's home

Monday, September 07, 2009

A 74-year-old grandmother told Eyewitness News police used excessive force while executing a search warrant at her home.

Bessie Small said a small army of officers snatched her out of bed Sunday night, held a gun to her head and ransacked her house.

"I was sleeping and I heard something & and they ran (in) and when I woke up they said don't move," Small said. "(They) grabbed me out by my arm & my arm is still sore, and had broke the fan and drug me over the fan and put their knee & their foot in my back."

She said officers also smashed in her big screen TV and damaged her property for no apparent reason.

"This chair & was turned around the other way and they smashed my head in this chair and told me not to move," Small said. "They had guns out & they were cursing at me calling me talking about we ought to kill you old woman." The officers were looking for one of her grandsons who hasn't lived with her in two years.

Small's grandson, 24-year-old Larry Everett, recently had murder charges against him dropped and is now wanted on drug related charges.

Authorities said he has a history of violence and he was recently seen leaving Small's house, which is also his last known address.

"They say they were looking for my grandson," Small said. "And I told them & 'y'all can ask anybody, cause I've been here 30 years and people all around here know I live here by myself'."

A police spokesperson was not available to talk on camera Monday, but the desk sergeant told Eyewitness News that it was a legally executed search warrant and they can be violent and destructive.

Small said she plans to file a complaint against the department.
