On Monday, the student-run Greek Judicial Board announced sanctions against the Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity on UNC Chapel Hill's campus.

The board said it found the fraternity violated several rules during a party the night before a police shooting where the chapter's president was killed. It said the frat served alcohol when they were not supposed to, and they did not have a security guard or guest list as called for in fraternity rules.

In August, UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp asked the Division of Students Affairs to review whether any university or fraternity policies were violated at the DKE party.

Hours after the party on August 23, DKE president Courtland Smith was shot and killed by a police officer in Archdale, near Greensboro.

Police reports stated 20-year-old Smith called 911 from his car around 6 a.m. to say he was suicidal and needed help.

When officers stopped Smiths's SUV, investigators said there was an altercation that resulted in Officer Jeremy Paul Flinchum, 29, shooting and killing Smith.

In the report released by the Greek Judicial Board, it said the Greek system's Fraternity and Sorority Standards Review Board will review the DKE chapter's recognition for completion by the end of October.

The fraternity faces a year-long social probation.

The board ultimately has the authority to remove university recognition from the chapter.
