UNC sirens test success

  

CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tested its sirens Tuesday.

The system is designed to warn students of danger.

Each semester, the university tests the emergency sirens and text messaging as part of the Alert Carolina safety awareness campaign.

The sirens sounded an alert tone around 12:10 p.m. with a brief pre-recorded public address message, followed by a test text message to more than 38,000 cell phone numbers registered by students, faculty and staff in the online campus directory.

Officials said anyone near or outside campus probably heard the sirens. When the test was complete, a different tone and message signaled that everyone could return to their normal activities.

Sirens are used for life-threatening emergencies such as an armed or dangerous person on campus; a major chemical spill; or a tornado sighting.
