CHAPEL HILL (WTVD) -- Hundreds of women got an inspirational workout Sunday in Chapel Hill.
They were involved in a triathlon organized by Endurance Magazine.
During the Ramblin' Rose Triathlon, the women ran, rode bikes and swam.
"It was cold and rainy and you had to be a real trouper to finish then, but we all did," tri-athlete Katie Russel said.
The event first started in 2006. About 400 tri-athletes signed up then and around 650 came aboard for Sunday's family friendly event.
"Her birthday was on Friday, she turned 68," said tri-athlete Kristin Somers about her mother. "She's one of the oldest women here and I'm really excited that she's doing it."
Some participants were coming off injuries and illness. Some were even cancer survivors who conquered all three challenges.
"This is not as bad as chemo," tri-athlete Carey Fitzmaurice said. "One of the reasons why I reacted so well to the chemo and I was able to tolerate the higher doses they wanted to give me was the fact that my underlying health was very good."
Organizers said the women have spread the word about the triathlon, which has helped make it more popular.
It's gotten so popular, that plans call for expanding the event next year to two more locations in north Raleigh and suburban Charlotte.
