Cumberland County Sheriff's Detectives have charged a Hope Mills man with exposing himself to children on a school bus Friday morning.

Joseph Clayton Southerland, 50, of 121 Bledsoe Street, allegedly drove his GMC truck alongside the school bus while exposing himself and masturbating. Students on the bus, who range between the ages of five to 11 years, said they had witnessed the crime on several separate occasions.

Southerland was identified after a witness wrote down the license tag number of the vehicle and reported the incident to law officers. He was also identified in a suspect lineup by several witnesses.

Southerland is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $60,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to make a first court appearance on Monday.
