Ft. Hood shooter linked to Durham unit

Saturday, November 07, 2009

ABC 11 Eyewitness News is learning about another North Carolina connection to the shooting rampage at Fort Hood. And, this development hits close to home.

An Army official confirms that the alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, was scheduled to deploy with a Durham based reserve unit. That unit is the 1493rd Combat Stress Control Detachment. The Army also confirms that six of the wounded soldiers belong to that unit. None of those soldiers were killed.

Our Pentagon sources tell us that it is unlikely that Major Hasan knew any of the Durham based soldiers since he was based at Fort Hood and is not known to have been in this area. The sources say he was simply scheduled to fill a slot in the 1493rd.

We'll continue to work this side of story throughout the weekend and bring you additional information as we learn more.
