Cries for answers to another unsolved murder

Monday, November 16, 2009

A group trying to keep the murders of six African American women in the spotlight marched in Rocky Mount Friday night.

The group originally formed for murdered or missing women, rallied for a local man whose death remains a mystery.

"It makes three years today, that Dexter Johnson also known as 'Noot' was murdered," MOMS organizer Stephanie Jones said.

Johnson was killed at the corner of Carolina and Grand avenues on Nov. 13, 2006.

"I just want to see it solved," MOMS member Quatoshia Hill said. "I just want my family to have justice, and I just want to bring awareness to the communities."

The 40 members of Murdered Or Missing Sisters, formed their group after a rash of murders involving six African American women.

All the women fitting the same description, went missing and turned up dead in rural Edgecombe County fields.

Only one case involving Taraha Nicholson spawned the arrest of Antwan Pittman.

The whereabouts of an additional three women remain a mystery.

"Yolanda Lancaster she's still missing, Renae Durham and Christine Boone is still missing," Jones said.

Media attention from MOMS' marches have kept all of the cases in the spotlight.

The group has even raised enough money to put up billboards warning the community. They say their only hope now is that justice and peace follow.

"We are just here to be advocates for the people who can't speak for their self," Jones said.

The group hopes holding marches will prompt more police action and lead others to come forward if they know anything about the crimes.
