Abaroa arrives in Durham

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Raven Abaroa, the man suspected in the 2005 murder of his pregnant wife, returned to Durham Friday.

A grand jury indicted Abaroa last week, and he waived extradition from Idaho, where he has been living.

"Once we had enough evidence to arrest him we made the arrest," Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez told reporters right after the arrest.

Lopez says new leads and different investigators working on the case helped lead to a break, which is a relief to Janet Abaroa's family.

"We're glad he's back in North Carolina and now the process can move forward," said family spokesperson Tim Dowd.

Dowd said the family is concerned Abaroa will try and get out on bond.

"I think if he gets on bail out here, I don't think you'll see him again," said Dowd.

Raven Abaroa called 911 in April 2005 to say someone broke into his home in Durham and killed Janet. The couple's baby boy was unharmed and asleep in another room inside the home.

Family members say Janet was vocal about wanting out of the marriage, saying Raven had multiple affairs.

"Why not get a divorce? Why not walk away? Why take someone as beautiful as Janet? [It] makes no sense," said Dowd.

Raven moved to Utah after the murder and then to Idaho where he was arrested weeks ago.
