ORANGE COUNTY (WTVD) -- Former North Carolina senator and two-time presidential candidate John Edwards has had his political fortunes go up in smoke.
He is currently the focus of a federal grand jury investigation, his marriage to Elizabeth Edwards is in ruins and as ABC11 Eyewitness News has discovered, these days he is spending his time mingling with people in local restaurants and bars.
Edwards recently moved out of his mansion he shared with Elizabeth outside of Chapel Hill, after their marriage was torn apart by his affair with Rielle Hunter.
However, Edwards is in still in the Triangle, so he can see his children -- Jack and Emma Claire.
Sources tell ABC11 that Edwards is now living in a rented house in Hillsborough and he likes spending time in the downtown area, where he goes to restaurants like Tupelo's and the Wooden Nickel.
After the earthquake in Haiti, Edwards went to help, but dodged questions about his personal life and the federal grand jury investigation in Raleigh.
The grand jury has heard from Hunter -- who took their daughter, Quinn, to the federal courthouse in Raleigh last summer.
Edwards' former aide, Andrew Young, has also testified.
Federal prosecutors are trying to determine if Edwards misused campaign contributions by funneling cash to Hunter.
- Steve Daniels: What did you tell the grand jury, what did they ask you, that could be problematic and could lead to an indictment?
Andrew Young: They showed me checks from some organizations that were dedicated to causes that John Edwards led, and those checks were made out to Rielle and they were sizable checks.
Andrew Young: I find it very difficult to believe that they would have spent as much time and effort as they did and are without having something they believe they have on him.
However last summer Edwards said, "I am confident that no funds from my campaign were used improperly. However, I know that it is the role of government to ensure that this is true. We have made available to the United States both the people and the information necessary to help them get the issue resolved efficiently and in a timely manner."
