NC congressman: bin Laden photos gruesome

Saturday, May 14, 2011

North Carolina Congressman Mike McIntyre says he viewed pictures of a deceased Osama bin Laden Friday inside a top secret briefing room at the CIA headquarters in Washington. He says the viewing was historic.

"There's no question to me it was Osama bin Laden," McIntyre said.

Nearly two weeks after the FBI's most wanted man was taken down by an elite group of Navy SEALs, McIntyre and other designated officials got to take a look.

"They are graphic, and they are gruesome," McIntyre added.

He says he saw 15 pictures. Three of those were of the sea burial and two were facial enlargements. The remaining images were comparative photos.

"On the photos, it was very clear that there was delineation to show comparisons before and after that it was the same person," he explained.

The Democratic Congressman says the pictures were made available earlier this week to members of both the Senate and House Intelligence and Armed Services Committees. McIntyre requested to see the photos. He says he never doubted bin Laden was dead but as a senior member of one of those committees, he felt he should see the pictures.

"It gives you a sense of how realistic a situation like that is," the Congressman said.

McIntyre says the experience has furthered his sense of pride in our military.

"We know this has been years in the making, and we owe a great debt of gratitude to all of our men and women in uniform," he added.

Gratitude is also owed to those in the intelligence community. McIntyre says gratitude for service members whose courage and determination helped end the life of a man who spread terror for more than a decade.

"There's a real assurance that bin Laden is dead and that justice has been done to this man," he said.

McIntyre says he does not think the pictures should be released because they could be used in ways that could jeopardize national security. He also says even thought bin Laden is dead, we need to remain vigilant.
