First Lady to volunteer at Extreme Makeover in Fayetteville

Monday, July 18, 2011

The White House says First Lady Michelle Obama will be one of the volunteers working on the Extreme Makeover Home Edition project in Fayetteville this week.

Obama's visit to the worksite Thursday is part of her Joining Forces initiative which highlights the challenges military families face.

Meanwhile, the foundation is laid and the walls have taken shape as the Extreme Makeover crew works round the clock to build a new home for a family that gives shelter to homeless veterans.

The plan is to give Barbara Marshall the keys to her brand new front door on Langdon Street in just one week.

Marshall, who was featured in ABC11 stories last fall, is a former Navy officer who was using her old home for the Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House for female veterans who need assistance.

Along with housing three women veterans and their children, the Jubilee House works with over 30 homeless women veterans seeking assistance each week.

Producers say the new home the show is building for Marshall will be able to house multiple families. It will also be a place where Marshall's son - who is developmentally delayed - can thrive.

On the build, show host Ty Pennington is getting help from designers Paul DiMeo, Tracy Hutson, John Littlefield and Sabrina Soto.

The new log home is from builder Blue Ridge Log Cabins.

An army of volunteer and other community organizations have stepped up to help, but more supplies are urgently needed. For the latest list, head over to the Extreme Makeover Home Edition website.

Organizers also say the build needs skilled tradesmen to volunteer. The show needs framers, trim carpenters, roofers, a retaining wall company, masons, wood siding installers and professional painters.

Volunteers must report to Fayetteville State University on Langdon Street to pick up hard hats and t-shirts. A bus will take the volunteers to the construction site.

The Extreme Makeover Home Edition show featuring the Fayetteville build is scheduled to air on ABC in October.
